Big River Journey 2008
We went on the Mississippi river on September 30. The students prepared for the trip by doing labs. Lab one instructed by Ms. Schreiber taught them about bouyancy, how many pennies fit in an aluminum boat? Does the shape of the boat affect how many pennies the boat holds?Lab two instructed by Ms. Mueller taught students about where water comes from that feeds the mighty Mississippi. They identified tributaries, and the states that adjoin the rivers. Students created a map.Lab three instructed by Mr. Barrett taught students about the life living in water. Students drew 4 up close sketches of Microinvertebrates found in local water. They learned that these critters tell us whether the water is clean. Some critters don't like mucky or polluted waterr. They don't exist in the water samples we look at if the water quality is low. We did the same activity on the river.
