Cleveland's After School Club
(ASC) offers both academic and enrichment opportunities for students in
grades 5 - 8. We are able to do this through our 21st CCLC grant and
community partnerships. Our primary community partner is the East YMCA.
Academic classes are designed
primarily to serve children who are not at grade level in reading
and/or math, but | | Ms. Rosales helps a student use a Global Positioning System device. | all students are eligible to enroll. Participants
receive one
hour of academic assistance along with one hour of enrichment every day.
We offer a variety of enrichment classes and the class options change every session. In the past year, we offered:
Knitting, Creative Technology, Kids in the Kitchen, Crafts Club, Baby-sitting 101, Service-Learning Youth, Kung Fu/Martial Arts, Hmong Dance, Japanese Club, Improv Class, iMovie, Self-Defense, Lego Robotics, Book Club, Swimming at the East YMCA, Team Games/Open Gym & Yoga.
Also this year, Cleveland Junior High will be collaborating with three elementary schools: Dayton's Bluff Achievement Plus Elementary, John A. Johnson Achievement Plus Elementary, and Phalen Lake Elementary
to offer opportunities for fifth and sixth grade students attending
those schools to visit Cleveland, meet students, and build new
friendships. The program is designed to help elementary students make
the transition to a junior high environment.
Registration | | Students prepare their Lego Robots for the Technology Showcase. | forms for
Cleveland's After School Club are mailed to every students' home at the
end of August. Students need to register for every session and registration forms must be returned before
a student can begin participating.
There is a healthy snack provided every day, as well as transportation
for those students who are eligible.
Behavior
Expectations:
The
Extended Learning Program is a voluntary program and unacceptable behavior will
result in dismissal from this program. Students who are dismissed will have had
(3) strikes or warnings about their inappropriate behavior and, after the third
strike, they will be dismissed for the remainder of the current session. Second disciplinary referral will
result in two day suspension and may lose privilege to attend a field
trip. Parents will be notified by
phone or mail if a discipline referral occurs. Students may enroll | | These students are preparing for their performance at the End of ASC Showcase. They presented a beautiful Hmong Dance. | in the
following session, assuming that the behaviors have been corrected.
Attendance
Expectations:
The Extended Learning Program requires all registered
students to attend at least 80% of the time. This means any students with more than 6 unexcused absences will be removed
from the program, and not allowed to register until the next session. Excused
absences: Written notes are due upon
return to the after school program.
